FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

There are some common questions most people have about psychotherapy, so here are the answers to the questions I get asked most frequently:

down arrow What does the process of therapy look like?

The standard procedure for therapy is to first have a consultation/assessment session which focuses on information gathering to understand the issues you are struggling with and what factors may have contributed to those difficulties. This is also a chance to raise any questions or concerns you may have about therapy, and I will provide my feedback and recommendations about what I can offer and how I can help. You can then use this information to decide if you’d like to work with me. If we decide to work together, the next few sessions involve mapping out your issues in more depth and finding the ‘root cause’ of where the problem began. We look at core patterns that developed as a result of your ‘root cause’ and how they may be contributing to maintaining the problem. This is what psychologists call the ‘formulation’ phase of therapy, and it allows us to understand WHY the issue exists so we can then know how to resolve it. Following formulation, we will begin implementing different strategies and techniques to make changes and facilitate full spectrum transformation that involves thoughts, feelings, actions. I will be there to support and guide you through this process, but the responsibility to make those necessary changes remains with you. Therapy is not necessarily an easy process, as it will require letting go of familiar patterns and beliefs that are no longer serving you, and stepping into new unfamiliar patterns that at first may be difficult because you haven’t accessed this part of yourself yet. Know that with a commitment to the process, your breakdown moments will change into your breakthrough moments and you will learn things that will serve you for the rest of your life! Therapy sessions run either on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, in some cases they can be less frequent, however your therapy progress will move forward quicker with regular consistent sessions.

down arrow How long does it take to see results?

This will vary depending on the individual and the severity of their issues, how committed they are to doing all the work, and their external life circumstances. On average, short-term therapy usually lasts 18-24 sessions, however this is an estimate and depends on the above factors listed. I will always review every 6 sessions where we are up to in progress, and where we are going next. This way, we are always checking in to see how much more work there is left to do. Some clients want to just work with symptoms, others want to work on deep structural changes that will inevitably take longer. I can tailor a therapy package based on your individual needs, financial circumstances, and preferences. This is part of the consultation session conversation where we decide what would work best for you.

down arrow Is my problem ‘serious enough’ for therapy?

No problem is too little for therapy or coaching. In fact, many people seek therapeutic and coaching support to gain a deeper insight into themselves, or to help move them to the next level in their career, relationships, well-being, or life purpose. Simply wanting to understand yourself better or having a second opinion by a mental health professional can support you in resolving everything from minor life questions to severe crisis situations. If you are not suffering from mental health issues, then coaching may be a better fit for you. Coaching generally has a focus on improving performance, effectiveness, and achievement of goals. Improvement of your emotional well-being is a natural side-effect of coaching.

down arrow How much will I need to invest in my therapy?

Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make! When you grow, you learn things that will serve you for the rest of your life. The amount of investment you make in your therapy depends on you. Generally speaking, allow yourself at least 14-18 sessions to see a noticeable improvement in your functioning.

My session fees are as follows:

Individuals – £110/50min session

Couples – £130/50min session

*If you decide to buy a block of 10 sessions upfront, there is a £10 per session discount. If you decide to buy a block of 20 sessions upfront, there is a £20 per session discount.

down arrow How will I know that therapy will work for me?

Therapy and coaching will work for you if you are committed to the process and willing to make the necessary changes needed to resolve the issues you are struggling with. The more work you put into your therapy, the more significant the results you will see. I often give exercises and homework to do in between sessions, and the clients that get the best results, are the ones who do these exercises and apply what we discuss in therapy within their day to day life. You will hit resistance when moving through change- this is natural and it’s where some people want to give up. If you stay with the process and work through the resistance with me, you will get the results. Know that anything in life worth having, will challenge you to grow and have you face those parts of yourself that need healing. It’s not always a walk in the park, and it’s why I’m here to guide you through this process so you can reach that desired place of wholeness and freedom.
